North Carolina Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program - Materials and Publications



Families Eating Smart and Moving More (FESMM), developed collaboratively with the Division of Public Health, and NC State University is a practice-tested intervention included in the SNAP-Ed Toolkit. The curriculum targets families with children addressing key health behaviors to improve dietary intake, physical activity, food resource management, food safety, food security, and maintaining a healthy weight. Interactive videos invite participants to engage in physical activity and healthy recipe preparation. Prompts to promote and initiate environmental changes that support these healthy behaviors are also included and outcomes are noted in two national conference poster presentations. Some lessons are converted to an online series and all participant materials and visuals are available in English and Spanish. There are 21 lessons under five major headings:

EFNEP's Families Eating Smart and Moving More uses both hands-on food preparation activities and incorporates physical activities into each lesson. Participants are challenged to make positive changes to achieve good nutrition and health, increase physical activity, control portion sizes, practice food resource management skills, practice food safety in preparation and practice safe storage and handling of food.
